The statistics on 13rd, June 2024 showed that the United Kingdom reached a historical peak of 97.9% in waste wood recycling.

UK’s waste wood production amount remained at around 4.5 million tons, but its processed amount rose from 4.312 million tons in 2022 to 4.408 million tons( 97.9% of total arsings).

Since 2020, UK’s waste wood recycling rate has been arising. Now it’s a well-established market.

In 2023, the biggest 3 markets for waste wood recycling are large-scale biomass, panel board and animal bedding or similar.

3 Biggest Markets of Waste Wood in the UK

Large-scale biomass was still the biggest user of waste wood. It consumed 2.8 million tons of waste woods with a 2.6% rise over 2022. This indicated that waste woods played an important role in creating clean, low-carbon and secure power.
Panel board remained the 2nd place in utilizing waste wood. It occupied a share of 22% (963,000 tons) in this market. It had a decline of 5% compared to 2022, due to a depressed housing market and the closure of West Fraser South Molton.
Animal bedding, equine surfacing, other recycling and reuse increased during the year to 350,000 tons, representing 8% of wood processed.

Other key findings included:

  • Exports/imports netted off rose to 205,000 tons from 130,000 tons in 2022 accounting for 5% of all wood processed, due to high demand for biomass feedstock in Europe
  • Usage in small scale biomass remained static at 90,000 tons, representing 2% of the market
  • The remainder of the 4.5 million tonnes of waste wood is believed to go to informal markets, such as being burnt during bonfire night or at home
